My wife's family owns a cabin in the North Fork Club, built in the late 1930s. We go up as often as we can, summer and winter.

Initial Attraction:

My first visit to the Henry's Fork was in 1989 and I was stunned at the beauty of the river and environs. I had driven through Island Park, but had no idea what lay beyond the first row of trees.

Although fishing the area was the initial draw, general enjoyment of the pristine wildness of the Henry's Fork and the entire ecosystem draws us back every year.

I had heard and read about the Henry’s Fork since childhood, and first fished the ranch 20 years ago. 

Initial Attraction:

As a kid growing up in Upstate New York, my friend's parents would go out to Three Rivers Ranch in Warm River, ID each summer... and they would return with tales of giant rainbows and mayflies everywhere. It left me with my own vision of what the West was all about.

I followed in the footsteps of my wife's uncle, an active HFF supporter and a member of the Flatrock Club for many years. 

Initial Attraction:

I was fortunate enough to marry into a family that had been fishing the Henry's Fork since the 1930s. With the zeal of a late-in-life convert, I enthusiastically took to fly fishing.

My first visit to the Ranch occurred in June of 1972, and I was able to spend two days while driving back east from graduate school in California.  I had never seen such beauty, so many caddis and such selective fish.  It has been a pleasure to visit and work with the Foundation for the majority of the years since.

Especially enjoy learning from the Masters:  Mike Lawson, Rene Harrop, Jack Dennis, and many talented guides in the region.  Have enjoyed the Ranch Manager's cabin in the State Park and appreciate their historical perspective.  I am thankful that the Foundation has taken a good look at what we have here on this fragile planet, and is taking every known measure to conserve and protect this river system.

Wildlife photography (especially birds in flight), hiking, wildflowers, birding in North and South America.  Also, have enjoyed working as a Consultant with Major League Baseball.

Limitless gratitude for tranquil times when I look over a river and realize the gifts of nature that I do not want to live without.

I was part of the team when the Henry’s Fork Foundation was first organized. I spent many hours with Bill Manlove discussing his vision for the Henry’s Fork Foundation. I served as Vice President of the volunteer organization for a number of years until we made the decision to hire an executive director.

Noted author, fly tier, and lecturer. His book, Spring Creeks, has already become a classic. His newest book, Fly Fishing Guide to the Henry’s Fork, was published in July 2012. He is also featured in several DVDs including the Henry’s Fork and South Fork of the Snake.

Has traveled to many of the greatest fly fishing destinations throughout the world and continues to explore new opportunities. Most of his exploits occur during the winter months when fishing days in Idaho are limited. The great fly fishing he has experienced throughout the world only serves to reinforce his conviction that the best is right in his own backyard. His heart will always be with the home waters he has loved and enjoyed all of his life.

At the age of 12, my friend's dad took us to Box Canyon for my first fly fishing experience. I am still looking for the big one that broke me off that day.

The unsurpassed quality of the overall fly fishing experience and challenge on the Henry’s cannot be matched in the lower 48 states.  The Henry’s Fork is one of only two hand-full of rivers in the world that provide a superior fly fishing experience.

I was elected to the board this year.  My wife Lauri and I have been members for at least seven years and appreciate the Foundation's work and its collaborative approach to resolving problems that affect it and others having a stake in the river.

Initial Attraction:

I grew up in the area and started fishing the Henry's Fork as a youngster with my dad.  My favorite spots then were the bathtub upstream from Macks Inn and Wood Road 11.

Current Residence:

Lauri and I allocate our time, summer and winter, between Spokane, Washington, where she is an appellate court judge and I am a business and trial lawyer, and our dry farm east of Ashton.  The law end of things subsidizes our farming operation, and the farming operation subsidizes our mental health so that we can continue to practice law.  We raise malting barley, which is used to make beer and other forms of consumptive alcohol.

I founded TroutHunter with Rich Paini and Rene Harrop in 1999, where we run a lodge, bar, restaurant, fly shop, guide service, and general gathering place.

Initial Attraction:

I graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1993 and immediately travelled to Island Park to become an HFF intern funded by the A. Paul Knight Memorial Scholarship. Like many HFF interns before and since, I decided to stay.
