2019 Science and Technology Raffle

The Science and Technology Raffle raises money to increase HFF’s scientific and technological capacity to inform real-time, science-based management of the Henry’s Fork and its wild trout fisheries. HFF uses predictive computer models, modern statistical methods, and the latest high-tech hardware and software to promote favorable streamflow, good water quality, healthy fish populations, and a positive fishing experience.

While wild trout and agriculture might not seem like a natural pair, bridging local irrigators and the Henry’s Fork fishery can bring benefits to water resources and the health of the river at a more significant scale than ever before. HFF, Friends of the Teton River, Trout Unlimited, and The Nature Conservancy are working with major agricultural producers and landowners in our area to reducing irrigation demand and keep water in Island Park Reservoir.

A key way to achieve irrigation demand reduction is through land-lease agreements, including agreements to not divert water from the river. The Farms and Fish Program also incentivizes farmers to plant alternative crops that use less water, or use water outside the peak irrigation demand, as well as improve soil health, reduce wind erosion and sediment runoff, and benefit water quality.

To be successful into the future, the Farms and Fish Program must be self-sustaining by creating or supporting markets for these crops that use less water, and must have skilled staff to establish partnerships and monitor progress in the field. HFF and partners estimate that, in its first few years, the program needs about $400,000 annually to achieve the goal of meaningful water savings in Island Park for the benefit of the fishery. The program has made a strong start, but we need your help to achieve our goals of improved water quality and better flows for wild trout.

You can support this work and have a chance to win one of the following five prizes by contributing to the raffle and sponsor our Upper Snake Farms and Fish Program.
