2020 Science and Technology Raffle

The Science and Technology Raffle raises money to increase HFF’s scientific and technological capacity to inform real-time, science-based management of the Henry’s Fork and its wild trout fisheries. HFF uses predictive computer models, modern statistical methods, and the latest high-tech hardware and software to promote favorable streamflow, good water quality, healthy fish populations, and a positive fishing experience.

The Henry’s Fork Foundation (HFF) has traditionally focused a significant amount of our conservation and research effort on the world-famous Ranch reach. However, as anglers seek out high-quality fishing experiences throughout the Henry’s Fork, HFF has recognized opportunities to improve what could be a cold water refuge in the face of warming temperatures and uncertain water resources – the “Upper River”, the Henry’s Fork upstream of Island Park Reservoir.

Observations from anglers indicate a decline in the Upper River fishery since the 1980s, yet the river is full of cool, clear water with abundant insects— perfect for trout. In 2019, HFF launched a four-year PhD research effort led by Jack McLaren to assess the factors limiting fisheries production in this reach. In Box Canyon, we know winter flows are the most significant factor influencing trout populations, but what is the equivalent of “winter flow” for the Upper River? Nutrients? Fish habitat?

Results from this project will support efforts by state and federal agencies and the Henry’s Fork Foundation to inform design of the new Mack’s Inn wastewater treatment plant and improve the Upper River for trout. An estimated $70,000 per year is needed to conduct the field work, laboratory analysis, and statistical modeling to complete this work over the next three years. Your support has made decades of research and programmatic work possible and now the headwaters of the Henry’s Fork needs that support to ensure this crucial work continues.
