Giving Tuesday: South Fork Initiative

If you’ve spent any time on this river, you’ve seen it—wild trout rising in riffles, cold water flowing off the canyon walls, the unmistakable feeling that this river matters. But like rivers across the West, the South Fork is experiencing change. This is why the South Fork Initiative exists. Not to react after problems appear—but to build the systems, relationships, and science needed to get ahead of them. Because of donor support, we have three water-quality sondes and a real-time data website, begun a climate and snowmelt study to forecast future water availability, restored tributaries like Rainey and Third Creek, and engaged hundreds in education and community outreach. As we enter the year-end giving season—and approach Giving Tuesday—we invite you to stand with the South Fork. This campaign fuels next year’s momentum, ensuring we can put even more science, collaboration, and restoration into action.   GIVING TUESDAY GIVING LEVELS AND INCENTIVES $50 – Loon Outdoors Nocturnal Headlamp $100 – Custom HFF YETI Shot Glasses $250 – Custom HFF YETI Pitcher $500 – North Fork Nets Wading Net $1,250 – All Incentives Listed Above $2,500 – Green Drake – Scott Centric Rod 4-7wt (freshwater) OR Scott Sector 6-12wt (saltwater) OR Hatch Iconic Fly

But as the river changes, so much our work–and your support makes it possible. This Giving Tuesday, December 2, your gift will go twice as far⏤HFF’s Board of Directors is matching all gifts up to $29,000. the dirtt plan: developing infrastructure to reduce temerature and turbidity For the Future of the Henry’s Fork Fisheries Breathtaking scenery and iconic hatches are among the reasons we return to the Henry’s Fork year-after-year. Decades of research are now all telling us the same thing — Island Park Reservoir is the center of the universe, the lynchpin of our water quality and this fishery’s health. That’s why HFF is launching the major-scale DIRTT Plan. We’re developing plans to improve water temperature and turbidity, build resilience for the river, and protect not only fish, wildlife, and habitat, but the jobs and economy that depend on them.  This could include engineering, infrastructure, and restoration of tributaries. Science-backed solutions to reduce sediment export from the reservoir and increase cold, oxygenated refuge for our critical fish and insect communities. Anglers come from all over the nation to experience the magic of the Henry’s Fork. We may be fortunate here on the Henry’s Fork compared to most, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be on the leading edge of understanding, and addressing, these issues. Science and Technology Raffle

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RAFFLE WINNERS! Grand Prize – Trent and Laura Bohacz, Illinois 2nd – Tom Raffin, California3rd – Thomas and Susan Powell, Ohio4th – Toby Cotton, Texas5th – Mary Robinson, California   “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”  – Benjamin Franklin The Science and Technology Raffle raises money to increase HFF’s scientific and technological capacity to inform real-time, science-based management of the Henry’s Fork and its watersheds. HFF uses predictive computer models, modern statistical methods, and the latest high-tech hardware and software to promote favorable streamflow, good water quality, healthy fish populations, and a positive fishing experience. SUPPORT AN ISLAND PARK CLIMATE AND WEATHER STATION Finding solutions for cooler, clearer water and creating more habitat for trout and insects along the Henry’s Fork is at the heart of our mission. But how do we uncover these solutions? It all starts with data and knowledge. What controls water temperatures out of Island Park Dam? Are air temperature, wind, and snowpack all connected? And what role does snowmelt play in shaping the river downstream? To answer these questions—and to advance the goals of the DIRTT Plan—we need to install a state-of-the-art climatological monitoring station near Island Park
